Newport on Tay sits on the south bank of the estuary where the road bridge enters the Kingdom of Fife. Before the building of the Tay Road Bridge it was a busy ferry port for people and traffic crossing from the Dundee side. The history of Newport is linked to the development of Dundee and was originally called New Dundee. It was in the past a busy rail link and ferry port.
