Sea Fishing Reel

The estuary is a popular spot for local sea anglers. Sea trout and Salmon move up and down the estuary throughout the year with most movement occurring in the Spring and Autumn. Flounder are also plentiful and locals can often be seen fishing for "flookies". Best time is May.

Spinning or bait fishing for Sea Trout can be carried out from the shore or boat and some large fish are caught by shore anglers each season.

The tidal race on the Tay is very strong and anglers need to pick the best times to fish e.g. incoming, outgoing, high or ebb tide conditions. Where to fish is also important as tackle is quickly swept down water and into the shore on the Dundee side of the estuary. Best positions are on the Fife side particularly Balmerino and the Wormit Bay area.(See Estuary Map )

The old West Light at Tayport is also a good position for shore fishing. In the winter months Cod can also be caught in the Stannergate area of Dundee.

Access to the port area for shore fishing is now restricted as most of the area is under development and the port is a secure area. You can still fish from the harbour wall opposite the car park for the Unicorn ship berth and the Discovery Quay shopping centre.

Riverside drive is a popular spot for beachcasting however it is best to fish on an incoming and/or high tide. The ebb tide is so strong it will quickly carry your tackle into the shore unless you are using special weights to anchor the bait.
